Whiplash: cause and treatment in Geldermalsen
Whiplash means the head has been thrown sharply relative to the rest of the body, literally a lash of a whip. This movement can damage the neck and upper back, where vertebrae, muscles, ligaments and joints can all be affected.
The best-known form occurs when you are hit from behind: the impact snaps the head backwards and then straight forwards again. Whiplash can also be caused by a violent movement to the side or backwards.
Besides collisions, whiplash can also result from accidents while playing sport or at home, such as falling down the stairs. To describe the exact movement of the head more precisely, some doctors refer to acceleration injury, where the head is thrown forwards, or deceleration injury, where it is thrown backwards.
Whiplash often goes hand in hand with neck pain and can also cause headaches. Not sure whether chiropractic is right for you? Read what to expect at your first visit or explore all of our treatments.
