Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine. The sooner it is recognised, the more targeted the care can be.
What is scoliosis?
The everyday term for scoliosis, a curved back, makes clear at a glance what it involves. With scoliosis the spine curves sideways. It is relatively common, yet it remains a fairly little-known cause of back pain.
If the spine grows curved to one side, with a single bend, this is called a C-shaped curvature. If it grows curved to both sides, with two bends, it is an S-shaped curvature. Often the spine also rotates around its axis (rotational scoliosis), creating a bulge at chest height on the back, known as a gibbus.
People with scoliosis may notice back pain, and bending forwards tends to make it more noticeable.
What other symptoms can come with scoliosis?
Besides back pain, scoliosis can also bring other symptoms:
- A tilted pelvis
- Unequal leg length
- Headaches
- Pain radiating into the legs
- Fatigue from reduced lung function
Chiropractic care for scoliosis
Scoliosis does not necessarily cause symptoms. In children in particular there are often none at all. Even so, guidance is frequently wise for them too, to prevent problems in the future. The main aim of treatment is to help limit further progression where possible.
A chiropractor focuses on disturbances in the musculoskeletal system, using measured mechanical impulses to help the nervous system function optimally again. In this way we work towards better mobility and posture.
