A pinched nerve in your neck or back?
A pinched nerve occurs when surrounding tissues put too much pressure on a nerve.
Your nerves are a vital part of your body. They warn you of pain or when you touch something hot, and they carry sensation and the sense of touch, which is especially well developed in the fingertips. They also drive the muscles: the moment your brain decides to make a movement, signals travel along the nerves to the muscles so they contract or relax.
Nerves begin in the brain and run via the spinal cord to the rest of the body. When pressure is placed on a nerve somewhere outside the spinal cord, we call it a pinched nerve. Common sites are the neck and the lower back.
Examples of a pinched nerve
Well-known examples of a pinched nerve include:
- Herniated disc
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Compression of the ulnar nerve at the elbow (cubital tunnel syndrome)
- Foot drop
