Geldermalsen: a chiropractor talks about bulging discs

Between your vertebrae sit intervertebral discs: rings of cartilage and other tissue that act as shock absorbers, so the vertebrae do not rub against each other as your back moves. Our chiropractors in Geldermalsen achieve good results with this kind of complaint. In this article we explain clearly how it works.

Chiropractor talking about bulging discs

A bulging intervertebral disc does not always have to cause symptoms, but it can sometimes get seriously in the way. Below you will read what it involves exactly, which signs come with it and what a chiropractic treatment can do for you. For related complaints we also refer you to our page on a herniated disc.

What is a bulging disc?

With a bulging intervertebral disc, part of the disc protrudes beyond the edge of the vertebra. This increases the chance that the disc presses on a nerve or other tissue. Bulging discs are common and often remain without symptoms, but in some cases they can cause considerable pain.

A bulging disc can arise from a sports injury or another trauma, such as a heavy fall or a car accident. Ageing also plays a role, because the outer edge of the disc weakens over the years. When the pressure shifts from the centre of the disc to the outer edge, a bulging disc can be the result.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms arise once the disc puts pressure on the nerves in your spine. Almost ninety per cent of bulging discs are in the lower back. The pain can radiate from that area to your hips, buttocks, legs and feet. If the bulging disc is in your neck, the pain can instead travel via your arms into your fingers. In the worst case, a bulging disc causes so much pain that you can barely move. If you recognise radiating pain in the leg, do also read our page on sciatica.

Bulging disc and chiropractic treatment

For a bulging disc, the chiropractic treatment consists of careful, localised adjustments of the spine combined with targeted exercises. Every situation is different, so we tailor the treatment plan to the person for the best result. Usually several sessions are needed to help relieve the pressure on the disc and to make progress step by step.
