What is a herniated disc?

With a herniated disc, the outer ring of an intervertebral disc has torn, allowing the soft inner core to bulge outwards. You may also hear the terms protruding or damaged disc. The bulging part can eventually pinch the nerves around the disc.

Common causes

A herniated disc is usually a result of wear from ageing. Over time, the intervertebral discs lose moisture and become less supple, which makes them tear more easily, even without much strain. In addition, excess weight, physically heavy work, incorrect lifting and a hereditary predisposition increase the risk.

Common symptoms of a herniated disc

Many people with a herniated disc have no symptoms, but those who do often experience severe pain. If the herniation is in the lower back, you feel the pain mainly in the buttocks, hips, thighs and calves. If the problem is in the neck, the pain radiates to the shoulders and arms. Numbness, tingling and loss of strength are also part of the picture. Generally, the symptoms affect the muscles and body parts controlled by the affected nerve.

When to visit the chiropractor

If a doctor has already diagnosed a herniated disc, make an appointment with a chiropractor as soon as possible. Many people, however, come in with symptoms and without a diagnosis. If you recognise one of the symptoms above or have unexplained back pain, a chiropractor can assess the problem and draw up a targeted treatment plan. A herniated disc is usually in the lumbar region or the neck; clearly indicate tingling and numbness to your practitioner.
