What is whiplash?

Whiplash is the medical term for a neck injury that arises in a collision from behind, also called a rear-end collision. This is one of the most common car accidents and is known as the classic cause of whiplash. With an impact from behind, the head whips back first and then forward, which causes the injury.

How is whiplash diagnosed?

If you come to our practice in Geldermalsen with a suspicion of whiplash, we assess your whole spine to determine whether the complaint does indeed come from the neck. We look at areas with a limited range of movement, muscle tension, general weakness and pain. In the acute phase you often cannot turn your head comfortably and the head can be painful. Your chiropractor also feels around your neck and back for tender spots and stiffness.

Chiropractic treatment for whiplash

While the whiplash is still in the acute phase, the chiropractor can reduce the inflammation with careful stretches, ultrasound and other techniques. We often also advise cooling with ice to limit the swelling. Once the swelling goes down and the pain eases, the treatment moves on to targeted adjustments to restore the normal blood flow and movement of your neck.
